A Positive Start to PrintEx15

The Highlights of Day 1

On a sparkling autumn day in Sydney, the doors of PrintEx15 and Visual Impact opened to visitors from around the city, the country and the surrounding region to be the first to see the very latest technology, equipment and ideas across the broad spectrum of the print and graphic communications sector.

While numbers for the day have yet to be tallied and analysed, a steady stream of visitors flowed through the entrance at the Sydney Showground’s impressive Dome, and initial feedback indicates that that Day 1 has proven a very positive start for the show.

For exhibitors, it was an encouraging start, with reports of constant traffic and plenty of earnest discussion happening on stands. By lunch time, some were already saying it was the busiest ‘first day’ attendance they could remember – “we’ve been flat out” said one show veteran - with the numbers matched by the level of interest from visitors, who are reportedly very focused on deriving maximum value from the show.

In line with pre-registration trends, the first day of PrintEx15 indicates that it is, indeed, a ‘decision makers’ show, with more than 50% of visitors who came through the doors today CEOs, MDs, Owners, Partners or Managers at their businesses. This is borne out by the number of ‘SOLD’ signs which have appeared during the day, indicating that visitors are taking advantage of the opportunity to see and compare technologies, discuss their options with the experts on hand, and make their final purchasing decisions.

Unquestionably, last night’s Federal Budget will have heightened the already strong interest from the industry’s many small businesses, with the announcement that SMEs with turnovers under $2 million will be able to claim an unlimited number of tax deductions for buying equipment valued at less than $20,000. While stock and consumables are excluded from the $5.5 million deal, there are a host of options at PrintEx which will qualify, and many more which, while they don’t fit under the $20,000 threshold, will also be more affordable given the new accelerated depreciation system.

Also generating plenty of interest were the early Forums, with strong attendances at the day’s sessions, which were conveniently hosted in purpose-built theatres on the exhibition floor.

Well known industry identity Kellie Northwood made it from Melbourne just in time to present an update session on the Value of Print & Paper (VOPP) in the morning and later in the day outlined why catalogues are still so successful. Brian Rock, who is in charge of research at The Newspaper Works, presented facts which he believes will influence the future of newspapers, while John O’Neill, former MD of Warner Music, shared his experiences of managing change.

There was also strong interest in Richard Harris’ session on Using Data to Reach your Customers and, later in the day, a session on the ‘Why, How & What’ of innovation from Allan Ryan from the Hargraves Institute, and an update on the NBN from Jim Carden, from NBNCo. A panel of representatives from ANZFTA and LATMA led an interesting panel discussion on current issues in flexo and label printing, while Printing Industries’ Jenny Berry moderated another panel presentation where representatives from the retail, creative, design and marketing world discussed why they continued to use print in today’s multi-channel world.

“All in all, it has been an extremely positive start to PrintEx15, with both the numbers and the level of interest and engagement from visitors exceeding our expectations,” said PrintEx15 Chairman Phillip Rennell as the day’s trade was drawing to a close.

“The level of excitement around the stands today was terrific to see and reinforced our view that the industry’s decision-makers are actively looking for new ideas, technology and support to drive their businesses forward – and unquestionably that’s what our PrintEx exhibitors are offering, with many visitors commenting on the enormous range of products on show.”

With experience showing that numbers tend to build across the duration of a show, PrintEx exhibitors tonight are preparing themselves for a busy couple of days ahead. Tomorrow, the day begins with the Heidelberg Women in Print breakfast, and will again offer a packed program of Forum sessions covering a diverse range of topics from screen printing to colour management, multi-channel communications and environmental responsibility, and a look at ‘products of the future’ with a session from Mel Fullar from Three Farm on 3D print and another from Paul Dastoor from Newcastle University covering polymers, printed circuits and other areas with very interesting potential.
